It's using common sense. You need a new car because you don't have the time to put into your current vehicle, and feel you have spent so much, and still need to do more. I wish I could take advantage of it myself. You can get more than just $4500 if you buy from Chrysler, because they match what you get from the government. Come on, $9000 off of a brand new car. The fact that you can get more money for it through this program than what you can sell it for makes it all the more worth it too. Just because it happens to be a Jeep doesn't make it more sacred than anything else. They still wear out like anything else.

So now it gets scraped and all the usable parts get used and the body gets crushed. There was nothing to rebuild it was all rust.
However he was sad about turning it in, but he is now driving an 02 WJ and my mom gets a new car.

I agree that it is sad to see a nice looking car get crushed. But I'm sure the majority of the vehicles getting turned in have a good reason to be traded for something better. Does it make sense for someone to trade in something they don't owe on, for something they have to finance and not be able to afford? I'm sure it happens too, but the majority of the vehicles prob have some unseen problems. It all boils down to what works out the best for the owner you know.

Yes, from a personal point of view, for those special few who benefit, but in the big picture everybody is being screwed. The $4500 is OUR tax dollars being used to reduce inventory of perfectly good used cars in order to jack up the price of all remaining cars, both used and new, much of it going to rice burners. Wealth is stuff, like cars, bridges, roads, tools, machinery, land, resources, etc. It is not dollars/paper. The government is destroying wealth in order to benefit the few. The few (corporate fat cats and financiers) make a buck for every ten bucks of our wealth destroyed. Basically it's a way to funnel our wealth to their wealth, with an efficiency of perhaps 10% or so.

The dealer would not let you swap seats because he would be in violaton of the law if he did. once that car is traded in as a "clunker" it cannot have ANY parts removed. it must be completlely destroyed. The purpose of this program is not only to get these cars off the road but to prevent the public from having cheap easy access to parts for their low MPG vehicles.

I think behind all this are the automotive industries that are in crisis, to sell more cars. And the worst thing is that the cash comes from the taxes that you pay. No money is coming out from the companies pockets. This is a very sad thing of America. There are other ways to incentivate new car sales. Stop this now.
But as far as finding engine and drivetrain parts, that may become a little more difficult... but of all the vehicles that were clunked, that only represents a small percentage of what is on the road now and what will arrive at our salvage yards in the future...I also asked a salvage yard employee about scrap metal information and she said that the President is having scrape metal dumped into the ocean to create more demand... Not sure how true this is, but according to the price of scrape metal, there would be no use to create more of it...

I dont believe they go to the crusher... I think they go to salvage yards for the public to pick from. It would be the same thing as finding a car in great shape with a blown engine... Hey, Ive done that before...
