when it comes to something as important as your steering components, cheap is not the right frame of mind especially when its home brew. To make anything heavy-duty enough over stock would cost more in materials and labor time it is by far more effective to buy a full kit, i.e.;

highsteer on a dana 30 is not cheap.

if you had a dana 44 with flat top knuckles, or a kingpin dana 60 you could do it for a few hundred.

You can do it cheaper than the kits cost but get quality joints. The trick is to be friends with kids who work metal. Get tube for cheap and then build it.

flip your tie rod over the knuckle for $20 http://www.goferitoffroad.com/products.htm
