Does anybody know what brand and type of tire I should buy for my stock, non-lifted XJ? I'm looking for maximum traction, and good rain performance, and I'd like to keep the price per tire at or under $200 if possible.

When mine was stock, I ran Treadwright Crawlers in a 235/75-15, load range C. Great tires, they're on my buddys XJ now, still going strong. Offroad traction was good, and they did decent on road. Definitely more aggressive than the Guard Dogs, I've had them side by side. Almost as aggressive as my BFG Mud Terrains (original mud terrains, KM1 tread). And at less than $90 each, you can't beat them.

 

Right now I'm really looking for something that will give great traction and wet weather performance on tarmac.

Maxxis Creepy Crawlers or Trepadors

 

General Grabber AT2's. They are great on and off road. They are around $100 each for the factory size. I had them on my Tacoma and used them in dry, wet, snowy, icey, even muddy terain and never had any complaints. I'll be putting them on my XJ when it's time for new rubber.

 

Had good luck with my 235/75/15 duratracs and they can still be had in that size for under $200. I just paid around $170 for a new 1 about a month or so ago. Put em on my girlfriends xj when I did my lift and they're still wearing nice too.

 

I like cooper destination AT3s. Whenver it rains I go out an race the awd audis and kill them every time. (5.2 ZJ)

 

Hankook Dynapro MT's are what Im running. Best onroad treadwear of any MT Ive ever ran. Good offroad too, and the sidewall has met many rocks without issue.


Goodyear Duratrac was my 2nd choice, but Ive heard of them having thin sidewalls, but many run them with no problems. Good lookin tire too.

 

Ok seriously, this is like the same ol what oil and what air filter. OP, do tirerack research. Everyone has different experiences with tires and the way they drive. I had to get tires in a pinch a yr and half ago. I got Firestone destination at and they haven't failed me in rain, slick snow nor the trails with water and wet mud. Over 15k miles and rotated right and they doin fine still. I just hate, with them, the sidewall. I'm always worried about it so I just stay away from rocks climbing at rausch
