So recently my rear passenger shock has started leaking due to the exhaust hitting It. I'm taking the exhaust to a shop soon but need to replace that shock before it seizes. My issue is I don't have the money to replace all four and want to go with Bilsteins in the summer. So I'm reaching out to you all to help with just one used cheap shock that will work with 3-4" lift. I just want some old shock you have in your garage, ideally just paying shipping a little extra to swap out the one bad shock until the summer.

From what i've read, if the shock starts to leak then the oil lubricating the piston will eventually disappear and cause a hazard to the vehicle possibly sending it off the road if you hit a bump or pot hole at high speeds.

 

I wouldn't worry too much about it.. my '93 had 3 leaky shocks when I got it, and except for a bit of a bouncy ride and a lot of body lean on turns, it was ok for another thousand miles (till I had the $$ to get new ones) It had pretty bad death wobble, and I thought replacing the shocks would help.. it made it ride a LOT smoother, but the DW was still the same.. Replaced worn parts (TRE's, front upper/lower control arms, sway bar bushings etc) No more wobble now.
Don't worry, your shock won't "lock up" and cause an unplanned off road excursion.
Extreme DW on the other hand could very likely cause loss of control.. It's scary! Hope this puts your mind at ease a little

 

Thank you KJC, it does. I'm taking the jeep to the muffler shop tomorrow to move the exhaust. Going with some bilstien 1500s over the summer, I bought the lift used. It's a Rusty's 3.5" full leaf so I know the shocks are old since Rusty's doesn't make that lift anymore. Both rear shocks have grease build up but the passenger side is very apparent, who know's how many miles are on the shocks from when they were new and since I've put the lift on a year and a half ago.

 

If you go on Craigslist you could find a jk, wrangler, stock shock that would work for that much lift for pretty cheap, maybe even free.

i have 90 xj 4.0 yee yee and the lower rear shock bushing completely blew out. I was wonder what size the those bushings are, if there pretty standard size or not. Couldnt tell you what brand the shocks they are since there just plane white

 

REMOVE the bad shock.. Won't hurt to drive around 1 or 4 short for a few day or weeks till you have the $50 for a new one. Just don't drive like a maniac.
