Going to look at a 97 XJ tomorrow. Its a 4wd 240k miles with fairly new 31" BFG A/Ts and no rust. Newer steering box and water pump. Owner says it has a possible cracked flywheel since the noise is coming from in front of the trans. Looks to be in pretty good shape. He is asking $1000 obo. Anything to worry about or good deal?

 

The rattling is probably just a loose flex plate, takes about 15 min. to fix with the right wrenches.

 

1k isn't bad he's close to that in tires. Just put $ aside for a engine build in the future

 

If the engine is well taken care of, that engine rebuild could be a 100,000 mi. away.

Not a horrible deal. I'd try to get it for $750-800 though.

 

Try to get him down a bit more, but if he absolutely wont budge and the rig checks out fine besides the otherwise noted issues id buy it and leave feeling like I still got a fair deal.

 

Definitely get it, but try to get it for $800 or so... Offer him $800 in cash, tomorrow. If it checks out, that is.

Maybe use the fact it isn't regeared (if it isn't) to talk him down, as well as the fact that the noise could (but probably won't, though you obviously don't tell him that) turn out to be expensive.

 

I would pay a grand for a rust free body.
