Well to update this I've asked a couple of friends and scoured the interwebs in seek of more answers. Again my curiosity is safety and reliability, I think anyone driving an XJ has given up all hope on fuel economy anyway
My friend mentioned this one situation where he was able to avoid an accident while he was in gear. Highway offramp dumped into a left turn where a pile of stopped cars were hidden. He started braking in time, but the soccermom minivan behind him wasn't paying attention. He was able to nudge the gas a bit and she changed to the other lane just in time, missing him by just two feet.
An interesting point I found was that if the engine stalls in neutral, you lose power steering and power brakes (reservoir aside). In the XJ of course you could unplug your ECU or the ASD relay could explode, but still your belt would turn and the engine would draw vacuum. This is a great argument against coasting downhill in neutral, but not a huge concern when deciding whether to downshift or not as you approach a stop.
In terms of damage to the drive train, this would also explain the bit about being towed you found in the owners manual, F1Addict, is lubrication within a basic manual transmission. The AX-15 is lubricated by the counter shaft splashing around - there is no oil pump. If one were to tow the vehicle and allow the output shaft to spin without the rest of the internal engaged, there would be damage from lack of lubrication to the output bearing. Same thing happens if you coast with the clutch out, regardless of selected gear (that is, the counter shaft doesn't move any oil). However this is not the case in neutral.
RememberTheMallamo, if an 18 wheeler is speeding up behind you you're probably screwed anyway. Either he's asleep or the brakes locked up and he's sliding (air brakes fail in a closed method, if the ground is dry he should stop almost instantly). At any rate it'd be a tough call as to what to do as in this context you're approaching a stop. If you ran the red, well, you could get T-boned and THEN hit by the 18 wheeler lol. Safer would be to hit the shoulder
