Default Removing short side front axle

Just checking to see if it is normal for a little diff fluid to leak out after removing the short side front axle on a Dana 30. The XJ is supported on stands under the frame and the suspension is hanging. I put the jack snugged under the diff but not enough to take much weight off the stands.

Thanks.... Jeep

Yeah. Could've been a little that came out with the shaft... depends on how much is "a little" though.... we talkin' about the size of a quarter or are you having to catch it in a pan?

There was nothing at first. Then a few seconds later I turned around and I saw some had dripped out and onto the floor.... maybe half an ounce or less.

Thanks.... jeep

That'll be fine. After I pulled my shafts last time both sides leaked a bit for about a week. A lil oil makes a big mess. I checked my fluid level in my diff twice while it seeped and once after they quit. Never even noticed a change in fluid level.

Keep an eye on it

happens to me all the time, just be careful reinstalling the shafts so you don't damage the inner axle seals, I usually put a little grease on the splines.

Normal, especially if the axle isn't completely level when doing the work. If you keep getting small puddles (or large) by the tire for more than a few days, it usually indicates that the seal has finally failed or been damaged during the prior work.

Agree with all of the above.

Thanks to all. Not surprised at your answers but relieved.

I just put in a newer but used transfer case, replaced front u-joints and hubs, greased front end, checked front and rear brakes, tested brake master cylinder and power booster (using techniques in repair manual), checked all fluids and levels (all good except for dark brake fluid.. changed fluid in the reservoir), changed engine oil and filter. Took it out for test run and found it had a droning noise similar to the sound produced going over an old bridge with a metal deck only lower frequency at 75 (120kph). Took it up several times and it was consistent. Took it up again and put it in neutral to see if it was coming from the engine but it continued until the speed dropped under 65 (110kph) as before.

What could cause that? My 98 Cherokee has only PS and PB with ABS.

Thanks... jeep
