anytime i lift my jeep, it's usually by the axle. this gets my "frame" up as high as i need. then use jack stands either under the axle or the "frame".

if i need to go higher, i have a hoist. but i've also used my highlift or an engine stand if i'm in my other shop.

you're best to search on craigslist to find an old shop jack. they are usually huge, long behemoths that can lift a tank. if you're lucky, you will find one from a truck repair shop that is even air powered.

 

3.5 Ton Floor Jack for the main heavy lifting (Caged is correct on the universal handle connection)
Baby 2 Ton in the Jeep along with 48in Hi Lift (Watch the Handle rebound on Hi Lift type jacks, can severely strike you or assistants!)
Couple 6 ton jackstands for good height reaching to frame rails and some medium sized 2 ton jackstands, suitable for under axles.
To repeat an old advice, Always use the Jackstand! If you fail to use the jackstand you will become the jackstand.

 

I use a 4x4 price of wood between the jack and the axle.

Gets it high enough to put the 6 ton jackstands under the framerails. Your not really going to be able to jack the unibody framerails without using a lot of wood as spacers. Jack under the axles for sure.
