Default First Jeep and Looking for suggestion

Well I'm as green as they come to Jeeps. I just picked up a 90 2dr xj 4.0L 5spd with a 2inch lift sitting on 235/75/15 tires. Not all to sure where to go with the build. I am going to replace the tires soon, I'm thinking an all terrain. I have had the wildcats in the past and I didn't like them in the snow and around here they don't do jack to the roads when it snows. If anyone has any suggestions on what and where to get a set it would be appreciated.
The other thing I have been thinking about is a winch. A couple of winters ago the hubs broke on my old k5 and I got stuck in a ditch nose first. So my conundrum is, do I get the winch in the front bumper or go with a trailer hitch set up so it can be moved to the back if needed.
Hoping to either get a roof rack or a tire carrier for the spare soon. This is my DD and my hunting rig so it needs to be durable and yet reliable. (that is why I sold my k5)

I would get a winch rig for both. If you didnt want to put a bumper on you could weld a bar in the front frame to frame under the bumber and in the middle put a reciever on that bar. Then remount the front bumper and mark the slot where the reciever is. Use a DA or other type of metal cutter and cut it out the marked slot. Then your all set for a front or rear winch set. You can even keep it in the back so it doesnt get damaged or stolen while riding

I saw that a couple companies make a front hitch for the XJ. They run about 120 before shipping.

I've read that Goodyear duratracs are good in winter weather, but I haven't tried um yet. With the winch just put a receiver on the front and put the winch in a receiver cradle. Wire both front and rear and your covered coming and going. Happy Jeeping!

I don't know what to tell you about tires for snow since in NC we get more ice than snow and nothing works on ice, except studs. As far as the winch, I plan on going with the receiver set up. You can go from front to back as needed and you store it inside out of the weather when not been used.

I can tell you from personal experience that duratracs rock in tho snow. Have them on my XJ and had them on my old K5 (go figure) and never had to use 4wd on the streets in any of the Colorado snow storms the last few years. There also fairly inexpensive, especially when compared to the BFG AT, which personally I hate. They also hook up in deep snow too. Went snow wheeling with em on my k5 two winters ago in about 10" with ridiculous hills with my buddy in his YJ on BFG's and it was night and day.

As for a winch, I don't have personal experience but I would think the double trailer hitch idea would not only be cheapest but most ideal for your situation.

I looked into the duratracs and either they went up in price or.the bfgs came down. They are 20 bucks more a tire. But I think I'm going to follow your advice and get them anyways. Last year we got about 8 inches of snow and it shut the whole county down.

Hmm Interesting.....I got them for fairly cheap for my xj and reeeeaaally cheap on my blazer.

Either way spend a few more bucks. You'll be glad you did.
