LOL, yea, i hear ya on that one...it aint much easier when you get out on your own and have a job either...I make just enough to cover my bills and it takes a while to save up for stuff for the Jeep

If you are VERY lucky and get it to the shop (have it towed) they maybe able to get it fixed.

170,000 is a lot of miles for these engines they are good for about 200,000.

It looks great though.

Good luck and best wishes.
hmm. well i give mine the best maintenance. always has fluids. always gets an oil/filter change. a tune up once a year. good engine dont give it heck it dont give me heck. but mine is pushing 150k its a 1994. i just hope it lasts me a while. i want it to past 200k with no problem and keep on truckin. the only thing that worries me with it is the lifters. they have always made a slight knocking (sounds a lot like a diesel engine but not bad) so ive jus wondered if that will ever cause me any problems...

This is my 5th. only the 4 before this 1 came with a dealer invoice in the window........NOW divorced......the 5th came with the KEYS ! still love them and hope mine is like the energizer bunny ! only 120k miles and was always locally dealer maintained 1 owner.
ONLY within the last 5 weeks i have had 2 replace the entire cooling system ! gonna write a book " How to rebuild your Jeep, and still have 52. cents left in your pocket " someone quoted in a thread " JEEP - Just Empty Every Pocket" .......TERRIFIC ! anyway good luck and i hope you will be able to get your beast on the road for good !

its the oxygen sensor.. that's what caused your overheating, check it you may be surprised..

my jeeps temp would rise, stutter then die.. (of course id let it cool down though).. it turned out it was the oxy sensor..

have your injectors cleaned, and run better gas, either 89 or higher or buy from another source as your current station may have trash..

I know when i got mine the heat didnt work, and my heater core was jam packed full of that stop leak stuff. there was so much of it in there that it came up both heater hoses a good 6 inches and the core was solid. that was fun to clean, well the hoses atleast, the core was replaced. toke her to a shop for that one since i didnt want to be bothered, could have done it myself, but didnt have the time since i was moving at the end of the week and had to get everything done for that.

Like you said you never know what goes in their tanks... (even shell's) if i were you when your really low go fill it up at another station nearby (not shell) and see what happens..

I had an '88 that was so temper mental if I ran 87 octane (especially mobil) id hear the lifters like crazy, if i bumped it to 91 they'd quite down.. (of course this is when gas was 1.20 gal. for 87...

Had my injectors cleaned at a shop for like $40 and I could run any gas any octane and not have that lifter noise like before...

I'm sure you can buy the kit to DIY there are 2 bottles I believe and you feed it into your system and hand it up on you hood (like an IV), of course this is a while back. things may have changed and i've never had it done before in any other vehicle..

have you checked your catalytic converter? That's another possible, if it were me (as i hate those things anyhow) take your muffler off and shove a broom handle or something right through the converter to make sure its breathing.. it may be something that simple... its better than guessing and spending all this money and gobs of time..
