I thought I knew everything there was to know about xj's until today, I saw the full length rack. I thought maybe someone had spliced 2 together. I cant imagine why they had a long one then went short. They are pretty cool..oh well.

Since it appears nobody knows. All the xj's that came with roof racks until 99 had the full length racks. The 99,00,01 came with the partial length racks .

Here is a pic of my 94 with a full length compared to my buddies 99 half length (more so 3/4 length).

All 99+ have a shorter roof rail. It was intended to give the Jeep a sportier design. Jeep also changed the cross-member slider to a longer setup instead of the shorter stubby slider after 99.

Default Same question as OP

I just purchased a 1999 Jeep Cherokee Sport after eight years with a 1998 and was crestfallen to notice the short, and in my opinion insufficient, roof rack. Why, why, why? Everything else on these XJ's makes so much sense. Everything I want, nothing I don't!!!😍
So, to reiterate, how does one go about adding a 1998 Factory roof rack to a 1999?
