Explain to me my "clear coat" problem on my '96
It the "green" color - the sides are perfect but the hood area on both sides toward the windshield are "white, sorta frosted." The roof also has a couple of bad areas including 2 small spots toward the rear that are "black." I guess the clear coat has broken down? Has it then completly gone away? Now, did the color coat "go away" too? What would happen then if I #1200 or #1500 water sand it? Am I then going down to the prime coat or
bare metal?
. Thanks.

You can wetsand the whiter areas where clearcoat has broke down. As for the color you would want to only lightly sand to prep for a clearcoat. It will not be a first class look as you are not repainting but can turn out nice if a clear coat shot from a paint gun not rattle can.

Yes unless the whiter surface is the lower surface, then is the primer. Make sure you wet sand with 1000-1200 grit. Your paint will be one color but not glossy.
