Default Explain to me my "clear coat" problem on my '96

It the "green" color - the sides are perfect but the hood area on both sides toward the windshield are "white, sorta frosted." The roof also has a couple of bad areas including 2 small spots toward the rear that are "black." I guess the clear coat has broken down? Has it then completly gone away? Now, did the color coat "go away" too? What would happen then if I #1200 or #1500 water sand it? Am I then going down to the prime coat or bare metal? . Thanks.

You can wetsand the whiter areas where clearcoat has broke down. As for the color you would want to only lightly sand to prep for a clearcoat. It will not be a first class look as you are not repainting but can turn out nice if a clear coat shot from a paint gun not rattle can.

Thanks - then if I understand correctly, if I lightly sand the "frosting" will go away and the color will then appear?

Yes unless the whiter surface is the lower surface, then is the primer. Make sure you wet sand with 1000-1200 grit. Your paint will be one color but not glossy.
