Hi, I'm new to the "Cherokee Form" and I have a situation that I'm not sure on what I should do about it. I have a 1999 Jeep Cherokee Sport XJ 4.0 V6 and the tailpipe fell off the hangers because they break (only 2) and then all of a sudden the tailpipe came out the muffler when I was moving it around. I can put it back in it seems because when I do it stays in stiff. So any suggestions?
Is it possible to drive without for a while until I get it fix?
Biggest worry would be sucking CO up into the passenger cabin. (since it's just the output flange rusted off, you're not going to get excessive noise for a while)
It's mostly a worry on station wagon type vehicles - like the Squarekee
Might want to keep a front vent window open or the vent fan on low.
I run no tailpipe on pickups (or bigger trucks, in the past) with no problem. It's just one less thing to keep fixing. Actually, my Chevy 4x4 pickup has a cat but no muffler or anything else behind it.
Its not safe for you or passengers without it if you do drive it "ALWAYS KEEP WINDOWS DOWN"! Like said its not a PU its more like a station wagon enclosed all the way to the rear back bumper. Always maintain a full exhaust on all XJ's to be safe.
So what's a easy way to fix it right now so I don't have to worry at all. Like about having to have the windows down?
See the hole in your muffler? There's supposed to be an exit pipe welded there. Yours has rusted and come apart. Only way to fix it is to get a new muffler. You may not need a new tail pipe, see if the piece that came off the muffler unbolts from the tailpipe. Then go get a new muffler, you can get anything from a glasspack (around 20-30 bux), to a flowmaster 40 (around 80-120 IIRC, depending on where you buy)...

^This, on a side note is that a rust hole in the driver's side frame rail in the first pic? If it is you have a lot bigger problems than a bad muffler.
mine did the same thing last year. it got a bit louder, which is not really a problem. the problem is how much exhaust gets in the cabin now. I sourced another complete stock exhaust and I will swap it out soon.
