Default Dumb question: overheating

Why does a head gasket leak cause overheating? Especially when there isn't a significant loss of coolant.

No. I have a 98 4.0, I don't believe the head is cracked if that's what you're getting at.

Because you're blowing hot exhaust gases and compression into the cooling system.
