Your radio SHOULD be a pretty basic plug-n-play. What Id do is buy a wiring harness for it just in case. If you dont use it, return it. Ive done a lot of stereos in my time and none have been really "hard". And its a good way to start learning how things work.

When you say dash light problem, do you mean check engine light? If so, take it to a NAPA, VIP, Car Quest, etc., and have them scan it. Theyll tell you whats the matter, usually for free.

A couple years ago on a trip my throttle sensor went and I think Sears charged me $15 to scan it. Then I spent $45 on the part, $5 on a hex driver for it and did it in the parking lot in 10 minutes. I called the local dealer at the same time and they wanted $90 to read the code. !?!?!?!?! I told them I had it read and had the part, wanted to know what theyd charge to put it in (at this point I have NO intention of going there, just trying to see how bad theyre going to try to take me) and they said they didnt do that, but theyd read the code (for $90) and if it was the throttle sensor the part was $65 and labor would be about $85, for a total cost of about $240. Yeah, no joke. Some places will blatantly try to rip you off, because youre either going to spend the money without knowing anything, or youre going to just say, "OK, thanks", and hang up. I told them I knew how bad they were trying to rip me off and what I thought of it. Youve GOT to watch places.

Check fuses 15,17&19 before you do anything else!

If its not a fuse then its either a bulb or bad wiring. Not too many things to NOT make the dash lights work. Me personally, I recommend you spend $20 bucks on a Haynes manual and figure it out yourself. Nothing better than working on your own vehicle and saving money. Some bad wiring could cost a TON in labor while theyre trying to local the issue. You could pull a few pieces of your dash apart and locate the problem yourself for free and figure out how stuff works and feel like you accomplished something yourself, all the while saving money.

Labor rates are akin to highway robbery. There isn't much that someone who is mechanically inclined + shop manual cannot do given enough time.
I personally have drawn the line in the past at rebuilding transmissions... I just swap that out if something blows (went through two of them when I had a Festiva, and did one for a friend as well). Anything else is fair game though. Wiring is voodoo...but if you know how to read a diagram, and have the patience...rock it out yourself. Usually it's a short that can be repaired (e-tape), or some new wire spliced in...not worth paying $85 for someone else to do it for ya.
It is possible that a short blew your dash bulbs, particularly if someone had the wrong spec fuse in there. It is also possible that you have a wire grounded somewhere it isn't supposed to be.
