Default Do I need the rubber mat under the engine?

Hey guys,

I had a rubber mat that used to be pinned up under the car to cover the bottom of my engine as seen in the picture below. It was falling apart so I pulled it out. Does anyone know if this thing is really worth replacing or if it really helps protect the engine much?

It's just a diaper, you don't really need it.

First thing I did to my 2000 70k mile XJ was pull that out before the first oil change. I've got just over 100k miles now with no ill effects. It's just a splash shield and not needed.

Thanks for all the input. Glad to see it doesn't seem to be that important. I was definitely tired of that thing hanging down and had to toss it.

Its garbage, but if you like to splash through water fast then look into some sort of a alternator shield, i still have to work out something for mine

It comes from the factory, but it looks like a Wal-Mart add on when it starts to sag.

LOL, wouldn't call it a diaper. That infers it needs to be changed....frequently. And everyone know XJ's are "big boys". Sure, they have a few "accidents" but, it's usually attributed to parental relapse. Finally got my XJ potty-trained. No Leaks!!!!!!

Donate it to a YJ owner. They'll need it.
