Default Do I have Trac-Loc?

I am just learning about the innards of my 4WD and I wonder: how can I tell if my Jeep ('92 XJ) has Trac-Loc?

Also, am I correct that this is what I need to keep myself from getting stuck in the mud where one wheel spins and the other doesn't move at all? Because that happens to me, even in 4L.

I have a 242 Xfer case, upgraded from a 231 if that helps, but I assume that Trac-Loc came on both models as an option?

If your jeep came with a Trac loc from the factory there should be a warning sticker in the glove box.

Jack up your axle until the tires are off the ground and spin one of the wheels. If the opposite side spins in the same direction you have Trac Lok. If it goes the other direction, you don't.

As stated, check the glove box for a sticker, but keep in mind that the trac-loc is a disk type unit and after 20+ years the disks may have worn. Of course the more wheels that are turning, the better. But tire selection plays a big factor as well. 4 street tires spinning in mud will get you stuck as well. Even ATs can get packed with mud. Some use 4l for mud, some state that 4h is better as it allows for faster wheel speed, allowing the tread to clean itself. You don't say how deep, or what type of mud, but momentum is your friend in mud. Go in slow, get stuck. Stop in it and try to go again, get stuck. As far as the 242 being an upgrade...that is open to debate.
