My 99 sport has power windows, doors, 4 dr., 4x4 with np231 TC, Auto, chrysler 8.25 rear axle and dana 30 up front.
The bumper corners and molding are black plastic and not painted...I think that may be one difference.

I don't know all the differences, but my 87 Pioneer has the full gauge cluster minus tach, ac, cloth seats, a 2.5, 5 speed, NP231, chrome bumpers, manual windows and locks, and that's about all I can think of. My buddy's 90 Laredo has a 4.0, AW4, NP231, gauge cluster with tach, more chrome than mine, and power windows and door locks. My roommate's 89 MJ Sport Truck (seems to be the same as the base model XJs) has a 4.0, 5 speed, no chrome, vinyl seats, idiot light cluster with only a speedometer and fuel gauge, manual windows and locks, and no ac.

Ive owned a sport, a laredo, and a classic.
All were 4 doors.
Laredo was an 88, had cloth seats, and all power options.
Sport was a 98, cloth seats, all power options also
My 2000 is a classic, half leather seats, over head console, all power everything. Body color bumpers (when I had them)
Limited is a step up from classic.

they are all just cosmetic option packages really. only very few mechanical parts can be different. like chrome/painted/plastic body parts, interior trim, wheels etc

+1 Almost all options were available on almost all models. The only exceptions I know of are the manual transmission wasn't available on models higher than Sport, and NP242 with full-time 4WD was only paired with an auto. Higher end models also came with the 4.0 standard. At least on 97+ anyway. The newest XJ is 12 years old now, anything could have been swapped in or out, or ordered with something extra. The only thing that really matters is the specs - no other way to tell.
My 1999 Sport came with 4 doors, 4.0L, AX-15, NP231, alloy 5-spoke Ecco rims, A/C, AM/FM/casette, bare plastic door and bumper trim, painted fender flares, cloth charcoal interior, tinted rear windows, power windows, locks, and remote entry.

I'm closer to a know nothing than an expert but from my very limited knowledge Jeep seem to have almost deliberately confused things with the various names and then there's also the fact they all changed slightly but not wholly from generation to generation.
I have two Cherokees. One is from 1982 and the other is a 200 model but as an example, my 1982 Cherokee is designated the Cherokee Laredo and I'm told the Laredo designation refers to the 2 tone seat covers and possibly a few other trim changes.......... So I guess it's a Jeep Cherokee Laredo but not a Jeep Laredo.
How's that for confusing!
Oh and just to confuse matters even more. I understand this model was marketed as the Wagoneer in some countries and the Cherokee in others. It's almost as though they just slapped on whatever badges they had on the shelf at the time and then gave it whatever name the badges said. LOL!
All that said, at least Jeep had the good taste to retain styling similar from generation to generation.

My 91 Laredo has power leather seats, power windows, 6 speaker sound, 4dr, 242, auto, factory alarm/entry. Chrome trim all over the outside, and hell even a fancy leather cover for the full-size spare in the trunk.
95 sport 2dr, 231, auto, cloth seats, 6 speaker sound, power windows, black trim outside.
00 sport 4dr, 231, auto, cloth seats, remote entry, 4 speaker sound, power windows, black trim.
In my opinion, its a crap shoot. Laredo is fancy, sport is not. Everything else is a mystery
Oh yeah, and both sports have factory tint, but not the Laredo
