Check your local welding shops, a lot of them will sell you metal if they have it on hand or will add it to their order if you want a full piece. Usually you are very limited in size when you go to a hardware store or Lowes and those types of places and like said below, they are pretty pricy. Luckily I have a source nearby that sells metal on the side to suppliment their electical business. I know a lot of times, I can buy a 20 ft stick of metal for what most stores want for a 3 ft piece.

I work at a steel distribution center called PDM. We're the biggest steel distributor in the western U.S. I bought a piece of 3/16 - 60x96 Floor Plate (Diamond plate) and it cost me cheaper, but the average joe it was $280 for that piece. So I'm sure you wouldn't need something nearly that big or thick. I'd say you could find a piece half as big... for half that price.
