Well a Detroit Locker for a Chrysler 8.25 from Quadratec is $755, one for a Dana 35 will set you back a little more at $900 (although I wouldn't put a locker on a D35).

Did he quote you at $1100 installed, or $1100 just for the locker?

$1100 installed doesn't sound horrible. Gotta figure there will be some incidentals in there, new rear seal, new fluid. Do they have to pull the axle shafts? If so, new seals there. Plus a few hours of labor, if he's a good mechanic he probably charges $100 or more an hour. There's also a chance that he's getting the Locker from a supplier and not Quadratec, Quadratec has volume and gets a discount whereas your mechanic doesn't. Most mechanics don't make money on parts, so you may want to find out how much just labor is from him and consider ordering it yourself. Just make sure you get the right one!

A detroit is a full locker which will require total disassembly, including setting the ring and pinion again.. which in turn requires an install kit with shims/bearings and seals.

Your cheapest option is a lunchbox locker which replaces the spider and side gears within the stock carrier. Aussie.. lock-right etc.
