Default Dependability?

Ive been on the site a few months. 1993 Cherokee country with 104,000 on the clock. Now while I love it here, some of the stories and problems scare the hell out of me lol. Then I remember most people don't talk about how good they are. Just problems they need help with. I almost passed on my xj because I read this site first lol. I'm glad I didn't, but man alive it's scary to read the tech forum. Anyone else ever felt the same as I did before you bought your Cherokee? How would you rate the Cherokee 4.0 against otero er vehicles dependability?

Don't get it, get an S10 Blazer or Rodeo or Kia Sportage.... They are all much more reliable.

Y'all are crazy! I had a ford and it blew up, I had a yota blew the headers, and I'm working on my friends izuzu rodeo every other week and its the same as a Honda passport and pathfinder! Cherokees are great if you don't abuse them to high hell like lots of people do here, take care of it and maintain it and its fine. By far the best car I've had and mine has 190000 on original parts except a lift I installed today.

S10 suck too, I'd only drive a old full size blazer or pickup the s10blazers are horrendous with trannies like fords and izuzus

having been raised around 4x4s and mechanics i knew what i was doin for the most part long before i owned a vehicle but i understand what you saying andall i can say is it all come down to the life of the engine, if the PO ran it like a rented mule chances are its gunna have issues. how ever if it was babied it may have 250K on it and still run like a dream but that can be said about any engine.

Auburns full of crazy talk honda and toyota engines, atleast the 4bangers and diesel are unstoppable and are known to take relentless abuse that would kill our 4.0Ls.......that cant be said for the bodies though, that rust is a cruel *****.

The least reliable vehicles that I've owned were Toyotas and a Mazda RX7. The most reliable have been my 93 Exploder and my 95 ZJ, the ZJ is the funnest to drive. here is my list of the cars and trucks that I've owned and the ratings for reliability.
71 Toyota Celica= great body style, but left me stranded plenty of times. 3
78 Toyota Celica= pretty reliable, cheap interior. 8
87 Mazda B2000 SE5= great little truck, took all the abuse I could dish out. 10
85 Chevy S10 truck= ok reliability, did have a bad rod knock before it was stolen. 6
89 Plymouth Voyager= a good minivan that always had a blue cloud of smoke around it. 6
82 Mazda RX7= looks nice being pushed to the side of the road. 1
95 Ford Escort= did its job. 10
73 Dodge Charger SE= fun to drive when I wasn't working on it. 5
65 Dodge Dart GT= reliable as long as the points were adjusted properly. 6
87 Chrysler Lebaron Turbo Coupe= went through head gaskets and the A/C was always a problem. 5
93 Ford Explorer= a great vehicle on the road, sucked off road. 9
96 Mercury Tracer= gutles but pretty reliable until it blew a head gasket (my fault). 9
79 Dodge PowerWagon=big, loud, and ugly. 440 and 6mpg. 5
2003 Ford Escape= ok, but started ti nickle and dime me at 75k miles. 7
86 Toyota 4x4 truck= a project I never finished, ran like crap. 4
2006 Kia Sedona van= had one electrical issue, my wife totaled it at 27k miles. 9
99 Hyundai Sonata= a couple issues, but good over all. 8
2007 Kia Spectra= mine had some problems. 7
2007 Kia Spectra= no problems with the wife's. 9
86 Mazda B2000 LX= got it cheap and totaled it soon after. No rating.
87 Mazda B2000 SE5 Cab Plus= I drove it 150 miles every day for six months, then my Step son drove the **** out of it and made a 400 dollar profit when he sold it. 10
95 Jeep Grand Cherokee= I bought it with 158k miles on it and have done a ton of work to it just replacing worn items and upgrading stuff, has been my favorite vehicle as of yet. 10

Lol the S-10 Blazer is the biggest pile in the world...The Rodeo is pretty good if the frame and engine hold together long enough to reach 200,000. The Kia sportage is one of the most under powered things I have ever worked on and have alot of problems as well. IMO the Cherokee is the longest lasting and best option out of any other SUV...although I like earlier exploders and 4-runners and pathfinders. Only problem with foreign is they all rust out.

My s10 blazer was a lot of fun. The engine was reliable for the most part until I neglected it. However the ball joints make me never want to get another one. I had it for 1.5 years and had the ball joints get replaced twice

Oh no the 6s they put in the passport/rodeo/Pathfinders were terrible, the yotas with the 4s were awesome, but the 22r by yota sucked until the 90s the antifreeze would turn into acid and erode the heads that's why they sucked. Ive worked on many 4x4s Jeeps are solid if you manage your fluids and do basic maintenance. Don't call me out sir

It matters on three thing that will go with reliability of a 4x4.
1st.If you are using it as it was intended by the factory (on road with light to mild off roading) mudding is really hard on vehicles, the more you tear the more they wear. If you are nice to them they will last.
2. Maintenance and keeping up with fluid changes
3. How much you modify the vehicle. Lifts, big tires, add to the tear and wear
My cousin has a 1999 s10 blazer was identical to my moms 1999 blazer. He tore through that truck and beat the **** out of it and it only lasted till 120,xxx miles. My moms currently has 225,xxx miles and its been the most reliable car she has ever owned. I keep up with her blazers services that are needed and it still drives (and looks) like new.

This concept is key to any vehicle, oh and buy the nicest one that was treated with respect and you will get a nice driver.

ive never had any issue with the 22R in my hunting yota, thats actually the first ive ever heard of such an issue, when i got the rig the 22R was about the only part that didnt need work, and for what it is its a pretty powerful little engine.

And I can agree to that but for people who dont maintain their vehicle and beat on it I wouldnt touch a blazer with a 10 foot pole. They have ball joint, fuel pump, CV Shaft, Hub, rear end and intake manifold gasket problems. I've worked on so many of them its ridiculous. If you want something you can beat on and forget about though I'd much rather have a cherokee, where I know I can at least trust it to take a beating without maintenance, with a blazer? Not a chance. At least not to me and not after what I've seen go wrong with them for almost no reason. But thats my opinion.

I'm not trying to defend the s10 blazer I was using a personal example.
My mom had had the best luck because she has had a good maintenance program (me)
I flushed the dexcool out when the warranty expired, once a year I do all the drive line fluids and grease all the zerks, change the oil every 2500-3000 miles, spray the whole underside with my own rustproofing spray, I check random electronic plug ins and put diaelectric grease in the plugs, and replace fuel filters. I feel because of my maintance this blazer has been the most dependable vehicle she has ever had. I would not stop myself from driving it to California and then over to New York. I am very **** when it comes to maintenance and if they still made XJ Cherokees today I would do all this from day one so I can keep it nice and problem free.
