When I get my jeep up to about 85 to 90 mph the jeep starts to do what I am sure is the death wobble. At this point the jeep starts to shake, i heard that the death wobble at high speeds is a common things for the jeeps. Can anyone help me out here

Hahaha! Ok umm to start...congrats on getting a cherokee up to that speed. Second, why are you even going so fast? Third, there is definitely going to be wobble on an xj at those speeds. Nothing to see here move along haha

Yeah congrats on getting your xj to thos speeds, last time I did that my windshield caved in.... And even stock you can get wobble starting at 55 mph that's why i never go above 65 after that it feals like my steering column is about to get ripped out.

Just want to say there is a difference between a slight shake/wobble and death wobble. If you got death wobble at 90 you would have to change your underwear.

Get on the ground under the front end and have somebody turn the wheel back and forth. Look for any play in the tie rod ends and track bar mounts.

Check your axle and driveshaft u-joints for play.

Lift the front tires off the ground and check for play up/down and side to side to check ball joints and wheel bearings.

Bad control arm bushings could also be the culprit. It's an old jeep, every bushing on the entire vehicle probably should be done and contributing to the shake.

Once you've checked everything and replaced what needs to be replaced then put a new steering stabilizer on it and you'll be good.

But seriously, slow down. It's a brick on wheels, not a race car.

90!?! Holy hell. I typically don't go faster than 80 in mine, anything over that starts to get dangerous. Under that, everything is nice and tight.

Like everyone is saying, that's probably not death wobble at those speeds. It's probably just a jitter.

The most common causes of jitter for any vehicle are out-of-balance tires, or worn out steering components.

You should follow the advice stated about about wobbling everything you have while on jack stands to check for play in the steering components. These include the ball joints, hub bearings, pitman arm tie rod, the drag links, and also check those control arm bushings for signs that they need to be replaced.

The diagnosis above is free to do yourself, but if you don't know what you're doing, have mechanic you trust do it.

Balancing your tires should be done with a rotation, and that could be $10-20 per tire. You may also want to check that your driveshaft is balanced.

It's only a death wobble if you die. So, best not to try it. You are probably experiencing the 'near death' wobble.

All jokes aside, there are a ton of videos on how to make adjustments for this. My advice is if your vehicle is shaking violently at high speeds, don't go high speeds in that vehicle.

Get you fixed. Get the sticker.

If they're out of balance, you would feel a wobble. You should balance them and then have them rotated for even wear.

This, right here, was the absolute best when customers would come into my shop and tell me the same thing in modified rigs.

Cust: "My Jeep shakes at +80mph"

Me: "Where is there a speed limit that fast here? Why are you going that fast in a Jeep? Your tires aren't rated for those kinds of speeds."

Cust: "Can you take it for a test drive to feel it?"

Me: "I am not putting myself in a situation where I can get nailed for a speeding ticket."

Cust: "Can you rebalance my tires then?"

Me: "Sure, as long as you are willing to pay for my time doing it."

Cust: "Can't you just check them?"

Me: "Negative. Your other option is to drive the speed limit."
