I think that looks awesome! Why do you need two though? I part out jeeps and will probably try to fab a trailer out of one of the shell myself someday..

Need two partially for the length. The one's I have seen done typically just take the back half of a 2 door (from the door jamb back). However that wouldn't give me enough roof length for the tent I want to mount (need to keep most if not all of the original roof length), nor the amount of storage capacity I want. 2nd reason is to minimize welding on the sides. I've looked at this like a puzzle, with the "pieces" coming from 2 door and 4 door donors. After analyzing it seems that the least welding comes from using two 2 doors. That's all predicated on ending up with the look in the mock-up (i.e. 1 continuous window on the side, no doors on the side, etc.). 3rd reason is the desire to have functioning hatches on both ends. Beyond looks, I plan to build in sort of a camp kitchen (with storage and other stuff) inside the forward hatch. I would go maybe 2 feet in and build a wall that goes ceiling-to-floor, side-to-side. Everything behind that would be storage accesible from the rear hatch. I do plan to draw up a rough schematic of the complete interior build-out of the trailer and it will probably make more sense then. In the mean time, hopefully this makes at least a little sense.

While not the same as the OP's idea, here is what a friend of mine did with a 87 2 door XJ I parted out a few years ago.

The rear tailgate just lifts off and is clamped shut and my buddy made a simple plywood and aluminum angle frame for a lid.

The tongue was made of 3x3x.25" square tube. Pounded into the frame and then bolted and welded....
It worked well and tracked great. But was recently sold. I wanted it, but decided I want to do a ZJ trailer at some other point.

This project could be done cheap from my point of view. Lately I have seen very many, very nice, running, driveable, Jeeps for about $400, and $500,,,,no title. Many people are borrowing money on the title, and can not pay the loan off. The last vehicle I hauled to the scraper, I got $462.00 for. For a trailer project, no title needed, sell the engine/trans/front end/etc., scrap the rest.

I hear you about using two hatches....but if you have picked one of these up when its off the vehicle.....holy crap they are heavy.....it would add a ton of extra weight......maybe a sheet metal one on the front etc .....
but it would be cool to have two hatches.

I would love to do this, it would be absolutely a blast to make with the right equipment and time, hope you don't mind me possibly stealing the idea or something like it??

The older body style used fiberglass for the hatches. I cant vouch for their weight, but it doesn't want to decapitate me like the new body style ones do if you take out the shocks.
all that heavy if you take out the wiper motor, plastics, etc. Glass
is very heavy, compared to thin plexiglass, and could be a good replacement
if worried about weight....
Seems like it would be very functional... I've seen many TJ guys do this by combining beds from 2 TJs together. If you're sleeping on the roof anyways, why does it need to be so large? Like posted above in the lower profile trailers, you could easily put a second gas tank and filler neck to the outside, as well as a large storage container in the back. MPGs would be better (as aerodynamics would also be better) and I feel like it'd be a little more reasonable.
