If you can afford an AutoHome RTT then you can afford to waste a **** load of money on this trailer.
I agree that a Comanche truck bed with a camper top is the way to go. A fiberglass camper top with the weight distributed across the top will hold a couple fat folks with no problem. It's been done.
Hopefully the pictures still work for you. They aren't working for me at the moment. Iirc, this isn't what I'm suggesting but it's an awesome trailer.

Honestly, I think you're going to regret trying to build a heavy XJ body into a camper when you could build something half the weight and twice as nice for half the money.

That guy did a great job on that trailer. Really impressed. I do like the idea of building a custom trailer/camper. Trailers / expidition trailers are getting big. Here is Episode 1 on Extreme 4x4 (Spike) when they were building a WJ and a trailer...

Some ideas good luck.

All good ideas, but not exactly what I'm going for. This isn't just for wheeling or an overnight at a campground. The idea is to build a self-contained exepedition trailer with everything needed for long-term, back-woods camping. In addition to the tent it will have a camp stove, generator, CB, hunting & camping gear, and so on. Putting the tent on the trailer (rather than the Jeep) is so we won't have to break down the tent/camp everytime we want to move the Jeep.
I just realised it was pretty dumb of me to ask for feedback but not really say what I was going to use it for. Sorry about that. Anyway, here's a more elaborate mock-up of what I hope to accomplish.

I applaud your effort and love the idea of a matching trailer myself. Looking at the pic makes we wonder at what point it might make more sense for you and your wife to each have your own jeeps? You can even match them if you like but, you could tailor one for mobility (cruising and wheeling) and the other for support (supplies, tools, tent carrier). You know how you like to travel and use your jeep but, there is a lot to be said for simpler builds and not relying on just one drivetrain.

I like it so far. subd. deff wanna see you succeed and pull this off. although I would probably swap out the tailights on the trailer for the ofroad style with the round led lamps. would kinda throw off the whole trailer looking exactly like your rigs rear end issue.....if you find this an issue. just my $0.02.

Txdessi, I think you have a great idea/project, and is very do-able cheap.
Back in the 70s many guys were doing this type project with custom Vans, to match the Van they were driving.
Looks very cool to have your trailer match your ride.
You may look for a matching vehicle with a bad engine or trans, or no title
very cheap. The body, frame, lights, wiring, etc are already there.
Cut off the front, and add another liftgate. A liftgate of each end of the
trailer would give you good AC on hot nights.
A little piping on the inside, would give the trailer plenty of strength to put
a tent or what ever on top.
