Default cranks over but wont fire up

so today i herculined the interior of the xj, got done and tried to fire her up. dead battery, my mistake, i left the door open all day and drained the battery. easy fix-recharged the battery and same thing, tried different battery-nothing. all lights come on and it turns over but just doesnt want to fire up. im thinking starter but not sure. i want to get input before i tear into it. Any Ideas?

If it was the starter it would crank over real slow, if it cranked at all. You should check to see if you're getting spark and fuel. Listen to see if you can hear the fuel pump humming when you turn the key to the ACC position before you crank it over. If it hums, then it's working. Then, pop off the plug wire coming from the coil that goes into the distributor and put the end on a good ground while your buddy cranks it. Hopefully, there is a bright blue spark. If it's an orange spark, it's too weak to ignite the fuel. It could really be a number of things, but we won't know until you run a few tests. Get back to us with the results, so we can better determine a possible answer. Good luck with your Jeep.

check your CPS. you can unplug it and blow it out and see if that works.
if not, it may need replaced.

if you're not sure about the fuel pump, try a bit of fuel in the throttle body. if it starts, you've got spark, so your fuel pump is likely the culprit.
if it doesn't start, it's probably your CPS.

After you test for spark, if it turns out to be the CPS, just let me know if you need help. I just replaced mine and can guide you through the process if necessary.

fortunatly the jeep runs perfectly now, unfortunatly i dont know exactly what the problem was. put in an opnima battery, replaced the starter relay, negative battery cable, ignition coil and fuel filter. all needed to be replaced and one of them if not a combination of them all, was the culprit.
thanks for the input and suggestions guys
