also, the craigslist ad appears to be in the rockies, so even if he lives in kansas, there's still mountain hills he will have to drive to get it to flat ground.

the xj can/should safely tow up to 5000 lbs, but if it's near that mark, i would make sure the jeep is equipped with trailer brake module and anti-sway bars/distribution hitch.

if it's an older xj with single brake booster diaphram, i would upgrade to a newer dual diaphragm booster to help in the braking department.

as for the 4L, that should be plenty of juice to pull it. if he lives in the mountains, maybe swap out the axles or gears to at least 4.10s.

otherwise, have at er. i've seen smaller vehicles towing same size trailers and possibly even bigger. but i live on flat ground.

no trailer brakes, i wouldn't tow it anywhere in the mountains.

hope he/she at least reads these comments and maybe even hang around, sounds like he/she can learn a lot from us guys here.

plus it sounds like he/she has a little spunk. that could be a good thing here, not afraid to tell some people to stfu. haha

and dan, yes, i think you did a great job answering his question as well.
Wasting your breath. He isn't welcome here no more.

Didn't mean to start a mess but had did what he asked about (tow things to heavy for an XJ to handle at ratings).

I have asked myself that question a lot of times over the last 40 yrs. from commercial towing to just my own, a reality check for common sense.
