Cooling system upgrade
I hope I put this in the right spot. If not, mods feel free to move it.
Hey folks, I don't know if this has been discussed before but, I did a search and didn't find anything.
I found some people from crossedup4x4.com at the local Burger King this evening and received some advice on how to improve my engine cooling system and it looks to be a relatively easy fix.
As most or possibly all of you know, the inherent over heating problems associated with the type of cooling system like what is on my 90 XJ.
Their suggestion was to buy a radiator for a newer year XJ that has a filler neck/radiator cap, eliminate the OE plastic bottle by cutting and capping the lines going to it, and installing a small generic overflow bottle to connect to the nipple under the cap.
I'm planning on replacing my water pump anyway so I figure I'll do all that at the same time.

It is an improvement over the surge tank system, and it is easier to burp all of the air out of the cooling system.

I was looking up new radiators and in the description, most of them say: 2 row wo/EOC, with TOC. Is this the correct setup I need?
Also.............should I spend the extra money for one with aluminum tanks rather than plastic ones?

EOC= engine oil cooler, you most likely don't have one. TOC= transmission oil cooler, only if you have an automatic. I would go for the aluminum tanks, they transfer heat a lot better than plastic and are less prone to crack.

Yeah, I had pretty much decided on the aluminum tanks. The aluminum tank version is about $100 more but, worth the peace of mind. The only thing I'm stuck on, is how to cap the lines going to the surge tank once I cut them. Any suggestions?

Search on this site and you will find a lot of info of how to do the swap. You could also check out http://www.go.jeep-xj.info/index.htm for detailed write ups.
