So the first “ugly” item was uncovered today. I’ve been pulling things apart in preparation to pull the head, found one freeze plug partially popped out! I have already ordered a new set, but that’s something I wasn’t expecting!

In in any event, I have been soaking the $hit out of everything with penetrant so things come apart ok.

I will be ordering new manifold studs/bolts so I don’t have to mess with putting the old ones back in. Does anyone know of a kit for these? I have searched it several ways, can’t seem to find the right kit.

I will have the head off tomorrow, going to sent it to the machine shop for cleaning and surfacing.

Rock Auto is used a lot here. Also just a good reference site.

Thank you for the link....got that ordered up!

I’ve been reading that the freeze plugs on these 4.0’s is kind of common. That makes me feel a little better anyway.

So spark plugs...I have heard many horror stories about using the working plugs. I always use OEM plugs no matter what. To that end, which plugs are used in these 4.0’s from the factory?

Autolote, Champion, NGK, and Bosch spark plugs are all good. Stay with the cheap copper ones, they work best on a distributitor ignition system.

Well seeing as I’ve gone from “considering” to “building”, I started a thread in that section.

I’ll see you guys over there I hope!

Be careful about surfacing the head. If it's flat and in good shape, don't cut it! The valve lash is not adjustable and if you take any metal off the head surface, you might have to shim the rocker pivots to compensate. Lifter preload is critical on this engine.
