Considering Parting Out 89 Cherokee 2WD AT
I'm considering parting out, or selling whole, my 1989 Cherokee, 2WD, AT, two-door, 6-cylinder 4.0 fuel-injected, with 210,000 miles on the original engine and original transmission. It easily passed smog during the last registration. Vehicle is in Placentia, California.
It was running great, and one morning the starter would turn over but the engine wouldn't fire up. I've replaced all the ignition components with no change in condition and through a process of elimination, believe it is a problem with the ECM. However, being that another used ECM of the type needed (5300 7842) has been difficult to find, I decided to sell the vehicle. It has been sitting in my driveway for a few weeks now. Besides having recently replaced the key ignition parts. The vehicle also has four new tires.
The body and interior are in good condition. All components on the vehicle, including the AC and after-market Sony CD stereo, are working fine.
I will consider offers. However, if I see there is no demand for this, I guess I will be selling it to Pick-Your-Parts. It's been a great vehicle and I expected it to go for thousands more miles; it was a real surprise when it just wouldn't fire up. Thanks.

Thanks for writing.
It has stock suspension. Regarding the tires, I would prefer to keep the tires on the vehicle so I can move it when necessary. I mentioned that the tires were new in case someone was interested in buying the entire vehicle and towing it away for fixing or pulling parts. Sorry.

Don't let it die! These 2 doors are rare as you know. I own one and it has 213k on it, still kicking. CPS? Computer? Does it fire?
Anyways if you part out let me know I can use some parts here and there. Got some pics?

Thanks for your encouragement about not letting it die. Well, since posting this "Considering Parting Out" message, I then later posted one asking for help from anyone on Cherokee Forum about ideas about the starting problem. I decided to try again working on it and installed a new fuel pump over the weekend. Ugh, I had to drop the entire fuel tank on Sunday to get enough leverage to properly seat the pump cap in the tank opening and turn the cam to lock it in place. I couldn't exert enough pressure in the tight space available otherwise. Today, I installed a new fuel filter before getting ready for work. I plan to try starting it up later today when I get home. Wish me luck.
It's been such a great and reliable Jeep, this no-start is really "out of character" for it. It's traveled up and down the state of California, gone camping here and there and done day trips out to the Mojave Desert. It's still a good vehicle, I just need to track down the source of the no start. I hope it will rev up the next time I turn the key.
