Tonight I'm going to (hopefully) buy an 89XJ. I want to be sure it's got the AX trans, and not the BA.

Can anyone give clear instructions on how I would confirm without a doubt that it's indeed an AX?

I'm not 100% sure if this applies to XJ's, but the YJ's went from the BA to AX in March of 89 so you might check the build date.

Edit: look at how the case splits.
AX15: Crossways, like the Tcase.
BA10: Lengthwise, front to back

Nice, that's really simple! I just looked at my trans, its just a hair offset, guitar the split is from front to back.

Where will the split be on the AX?

I mean, if its exactly like nine I know its not an AX. But I want to be clear on this...

Yes please! And I will list one of my BA. If anyone else needs this info we have it in pic form...

My only concern is the difference between the internal and external slave AX...

Pretty much if it doesn't have a crack going front to back it is an AX. But I think it splits closer towards the rear but don't qoute me.

Btw after I did the AX conversion I was happy. It shifts nice and smooth now. No grinding or anything. Clutch pedal is more stiff and center.
One of the best upgrades I've done.

Easy enough - slide under and check the bottom of the case.

If there's a split line that runs front-to-back (case would split into a left half and right half,) it's the BA-10. The AX-15 is divided crosswise into a centre plate, a front housing, and a rear housing.

The AX-15 and NV3550 both readily replace the BA-10 with minimal effort.

Always with the uber good and clear info. In a way I wish you were closer, but if you were, I would owe you more cases of beer/soda than I could ever afford!

But for now, I will send you as many as I can from the interweb! Lol

My new challenge, changing over from internal to external slave...

It won't be there, and it won't be as obvious.

Did a Google search for images, and found this thread: http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f19/y...ite-up-312203/

Novak also has a good picture of the AX-15, but no real detailed picture of the AX-15.

To help with visualisation, here's an exploded view of the BA-10/5 - http://cdn.liveoffroad.com/images/Pe...ansmission.jpg

And of the AX-15 - http://www.jeep4x4center.com/jeep-tr...sion-large.jpg
