Default Choosing the right jeep

Hey everyone. I am new to this forum. I currently own a 2003 350z and I have been shopping around for jeeps for close to a month now with no luck. I started looking at tjs and looking at wjs. I am a soon to be college grad and would live something to offroad on the weekends and drive daily. I am currently stopping the search for tjs since I can't seem to find a good deal. I started looking for the wjs, but I am having a hard time looking for the 04 I6 leather and sunroof in black with low miles. I have 84k on my Z. It doesn't make too much sense to trade in for something with more miles. I am trying to look at xjs, since they are better wheelers than wjs from what I have seen, but I don't know about trading in my 03 for something older. Anyone have an argument for any of these because I'm in a loop. Thanks!

I don't know if theyre better.. it's all in the build
if you're trying to get rid of the z, sell it. stock 03 goes for what 8000 tops?
then buy a stock xj off CL for $3000 and use the rest of the money to build it
a lot of guys on here would say to stay away from buying a jeep that's already modded/lifted unless you really know what you're doing

You could trade for a low mileage XJ and get like $5-10k on top of it then use that money to lift and modify that Xj.

1998-1999 are the best years. 1991-1997 are good, just avoid 2000-2001 and I recommend against 1984-1990. Basically same amount of room, not a substantial difference, I'm 6 ' 2" and weigh 200 and fit fine in my Xj... I even have 2-3 inches of headroom.

Edito NOT buy a 1984-1986.

I just don't know if it makes sense to trade in a newer car for an older one.

It does, because you actually make money.... And the parts and repairs are much much cheaper on an XJ than a 350Z.

ah man. you have a long way to go. I'd say ball park for a proper budget build on 35's...
over $3500 easy. and that's if you can do all the install's yourself. there's other ways to do it but this is how I would do it
the big question is, what do you want to drive over?

rear axle $250
semi-proper lift $1700
short shaft $200
wheels $300
tires $800
gears $500

then diff covers, steering upgrades, more suspension upgrades, body armor, lockers
not to mention all the little things like extended brake lines, joints, backspacing, etc.

it doesnt. it's not always a good idea. building a capable rig is a process. and its expensive. it could take years
so make sure you get all your research done before you pull the trigger
you can always just buy an already lifted jeep on CL. but you never know how well it was put together...

Tell my '00 with 157k on it to avoid it. It runs like a champ.

Not saying there arent issues with some but to say stay away from them completely is just wrong. You just need to know what to look for when you're looking at one. Late 80's and early 90's models are 10-20 years old on the far end and tell me that a 20 year old vehicle isn't gonna have some issues. They'll all have issues.

Just get educated on what to look for. There's 20 year old XJ's that are still considered reliable. Just the same as a 2000 and 2001.
