The Cherokee's 4.0 going out in a blaze of glory
Just bought my 97 Cherokee. Previous owner brought his xj to Jiffy Lube, well the people over there are a dime a dozen that actually know what they are doing . For example, I had to change the oil in my xj. So I pull the oil. then start on the filter, the filter was on so tight, even punching holes threw it with a screw driver it didn't take it off. So I went and got some custom oil filter tools just for this, finally the vise scrip oil clamed worked, but I had to put a BAR on it , to get the oil filter lose. The I took the filter off, ( 2 hours later ) , and the o-ring was engraved, due to be tighten so hard, and also, no oil on the gasket. Just do yourself a favor, and do the oil yourself, and don't run it 10k!

I need the car gone It's been in my friends driveway for almost half a year now and I have no way to pull the engine anyways. If I had a means to pull it I would throw it in my 95 xj. I have two other jeeps a 96 with 210k miles my dd/weekend trail warrior and my 95 that just overheated and blew a head gasket at 510k miles(Coolant mixed with oil and washed the rod bearings
). The water pump failed on me 50 miles from home the last time I went camping so I said screw it and drove it home with the heat cranked up. Id love to swap that one with my 95 because of how solid a body it has but just have no means to do so.

You read correct 509k when I bought it
Was almost all highway miles according to PO. The only reason he was selling was the few easy to fix problems it was having the wheel bearings were done and both rear u-joints were clicking but the nail in the coffin for him was when the regulator went out on his alternator and it was overcharging. I paid $500 for it and got about 1k miles out of it before the water pump went. Probably would have been fine if I had just paid to have it towed instead of driving it hot the 50 miles back home.

I was at the wrecking yard today. Walked by at least 6 of them. They will all be off the line and crushed in a few weeks. One was a 96 sport 4 door. All there, except the perfect hood I took. Liftgate got smacked so they junked the car. 165K. NO RUST!!! Less miles than mine. Far better body than I see some Forum members struggling to repair. Man, come out here to CA and get a transporter load of these bodies. Then build your Monsters in Minnesota without the headaches of rust. I see stuff thrown away that would make most forum members cry. Took the back seat out of a 97. Perfect cond interior. Got some stuff off a 00 that only had a front bump and fender damage. Could have fixed it with other parts in the yard. But they were throwing the whole thing away!!! Someone got the 4.0 out of another one. Left the nearly new starter in the gravel. I needed a starter, so I took it home for a few bucks and no hassle. Last visit saw a 231J TC sitting on the ground next to the vehicle. Someone needed the transmission, but not the TC. My arms were full, so I left it.
This season won't last forever. In five years we will be looking real hard for this stuff. Look at what happened to Renix. Old forum posts from 7 years ago were suggesting Renix models the ones to get because they were easy to deal with. Now you can't hardly find parts and they are fast moving out of favor.
