LOL at how offended people are getting at the offense taken - and it's mostly coming from XJ owners. What are you going to do, not buy a Jeep ever again? Oh no! Whatever will Jeep do to ensure that you'll buy a new Jeep... oh wait, you never were going to anyways because you'd rather buy an out-of-production model on the free market instead.
Well here is some interesting info..... The name Cherokee doesn't even come from the Cherokee language (as one could have imagined). Someone else made it up. So who cares what the name is, its not the name they call themselves in their native language, so how can it be offensive. If they called themselves "Cherokee" in their native language and we took that name from them to use as a vehicle name, then sure that's a little different. But that's not the case. All that happened was a "white man" decided to use the word that was derived from the originating term Cha-la-kee, or whichever story you decide to believe. If it was called a Jeep Aniyvwiya (Their name in the native tongue) then sure. But like others have mentioned, what is the negative connotation associated with the word Cherokee when it comes to a jeep that can handle anything put in its path? To me, that sounds like a compliment.
From wikipedia:
A Cherokee language name for Cherokee people is Aniyvwiyaʔi (ᎠᏂᏴᏫᏯ), translating as "Principal People". Tsalagi (ᏣᎳᎩ) is the Cherokee word for the Cherokee language.[12]
"Many theories, though none proven, abound about the origin of the name "Cherokee". It may have originally been derived from one of the competitive tribes in the area. For instance, the Choctaw word Cha-la-kee means "people who live in the mountains", and Choctaw Chi-luk-ik-bi, means "people who live in the cave country".[13] The Cherokee did live along rivers in mountainous areas.
The earliest Spanish transliteration of the name, from 1755, is recorded as Tchalaquei, but it dates to accounts related to the Hernando de Soto expedition in the mid-16th century.[14] Another theory is that "Cherokee" derives from a Lower Creek word Cvlakke ("chuh-log-gee"), as the Creek were also in this mountainous region.[15]
The Iroquois Five Nations, historically based in New York and Pennsylvania, called the Cherokee Oyata'ge'ronoñ ("inhabitants of the cave country").[16] It is possible the word "Cherokee" comes from a Muscogee Creek word meaning “people of different speech”, because the two peoples spoke different languages.[17]
Sorry my little SJW. Maybe mommy or daddy can give you a time out card you can use to go cry in the "cry closet" so you can deal with the facts you just learned that over complicated your feelings and what you thought was right (based on your ignorant opinions)

No, I didn't hit the pine tree. That would not have been funny!
Nothing is the news regarding the Piper Corporation and the fact they have used the name badge of Cherokee since 1961. Sounds like the Native Americans may be discriminating against Jeep....maybe they should be cancelled....
It's just the popular thing to do these days. Everyone complains about everything whether it effects them or not. It's a way for the masses to get the attention they are seeking because they aren't fulfilled in their daily lives so they need the feeling of being a part of a large group that made a change, whether its right or wrong. The BS part is, even if its only 1% of the population that's complaining, the other 99% of us have to deal with the fallout of whatever they were complaining about just to make everyone happy. But its the complete opposite. They cant just accept the fact that nothing is going to be 100% perfect in life, so they decide to complain about it...
The term "Redskin" was supposedly started by the Native Americans themselves, and it was in response to meeting people that called themselves "white", and their slaves "black". It was just used for distinction purposes. The only reason it became a pejorative is because when the "white" man decided to start fighting the Native Americans, the bounty stated something like "$250 for any Redskin scalp". So theeeeeeen it became a naughty word.
Don't blame me, I just read wikipedia.... (and use parts of the article that has been cited from known accurate sources)
