Depends on what you think looks good and what your definition of cheap is. I took all the plastic/rubber off of the outside such as the fender flares and corner bumper things. That is free to do. Eventually I will trim the fenders....free if you have tools.
- Make your own bumpers - inexpensive if you can get your hands on some tube from the scrap yard...free if you have scrap laying around.
- Make your own fender flares - again inexpensive if you can get stuff from a scrap yard free if you have stuff laying around and tools to do it with.
- Make your own roof rack (same as above)
Again pretty much depends on what you like and what you have access to and what your definition of cheap is.
Have fun!

Keep it clean, or keep it muddy just not in between
I love the way my XJ looks when cleaned and waxed, and when it is covered with mud, I just hate when it hasn't been washed or wheeled in a while, it is just...blah...
Seriously though, a good cleaning inside and out will make anything look good IMO
Touch up any spots that have chipped, scratched, or faded with touch up paint, like fenders?
Get creative, get out some more paint and change the color of the decals to make it kind of unique?
One thing I will be doing, mostly for looks, is sanding and painting a lot of stuff under my jeep. I am thinking about using that Rustoleum "Hammered" finish black for some things or just gloss black for the axles, and steering components.
Another thing is you could change your diff fluid and while you do that, paint the diff cover a different color as your vehicle, on my old xj I painted my front diff cover red while the axle and most of the under body was black. It kind of set it apart. This time I will probably just go with black.

Not to thread jack, but how would you go about taking off the emblems like the jeep ones and the 4x4 and in my case the sport one? Should you just pry em off? How should I put em back on?

In my experience emblems are usually held on with some kind of adhesive like hot glue or something. Just heat it up good should be able to work a putty knife or something under there and pop it off.
Might be good to use a plastic putty knife too so you don't scratch the paint. Unless of course you dont care about the paint or are repainting anyway.

Yeah, they can just pry off. Heating them up will help not to bend/break them. I took off all mine when I went desert tan on my old XJ and they all had adhesive stuck to the body and stuck on the emblems. Not sure what is the best adhesive to get them back on though...
I will be taking them off my newest XJ when I get up the nerve to paint mine desert tan again....

for my ugly limited stock gold emblems, instead of prying or heating them off, i just sanded down to gold paint to the bare metal. this way i didnt have to worry about finding the glue or adhesive.

Getting them and the adheisive off can be as simple as firing up the pressure washer... Automotive paint suppliers sell a double sided tape that works great if you want them back on, no oozing or having to tape them in place and hope they don't slip when you're waiting for glue to hardden...

you can get 3m double sided tape in different widths at any autoparts store it works good to put em back on and to take em off try to heat them up with a heat gun or hair dryer and use fishing line and saw it back and forth also goofoff might take the sticky off
