does anyone else think this has driven up the price on xj's, zj's, etc. i remember you couldn't give away a zj 3 years ago (except the 5.9's). now i look around and there going for a small fortune. xj's held there value rather well, but it seems after the cash for clunkers situation they have gone up a considerable amount. anyway was buzzing around craigslist and got me wondering if this was just in my area of everywhere.

I don't think it has, but a lot of good vehicles went to waste with that stupid program.

here in ny any jeep cost more then other places with our normal weather a lot think 4x4 is a necessity. funny thing is 2 months before winter you could slap an extra grand on price you want for it and people will pay it junk or not. i dont think cfc did much for avalibility yet, but i did see a lot of xj "clunkers" (beauties) junked.

yeah same here, alot of nice jeeps in the junkyard after that whole thing. crazy part is there where prolly 100+ xj's/zj's in my local junkyard 3 years ago. i just went back last weekend and there was 4 xj's and 3 zj's. i have a friend though that has been looking for another jeep and him and i agree that everyone seems to want a fortune compared to a couple years ago.

Yes it has, I worked at two salvage yards at the time (one yard got 600 cars the other got 4,000). Cash for clunkers took roughly 750,000 good used vehicles off the road (at $24,000 per car cost to the tax payer). The program took ALOT of one owner, lower mile, nice condition units off the roads. It did not take the turds off the road because those people could not afford to buy new cars. It was a horrible program that screwed America. I actually said to my boss at the one yard (my job was to inventory all the cars and I wasn't into Jeeps at the time)
"My god boss, are there going to be any grand Cherokees or Cherokees left after this?"

Not just jeeps.. all 'older' models are affected. It's simple supply and demand. Fewer parts available, price goes up. Dumb idea in my opinion. :/

I saw tons of wranglers, grands, and XJ's hit the shredder. We had a 1996 Cherokee country with 54,000 miles come in and it was SPOTLESS. I mean perfect shape

Had a 1997 black Cherokee country come in, leather, sunroof, 120,000 on the clock
2004 dodge ram 1500, 4 door, leather, 20 inch wheels 125,000 on the clock
1988 eagle wagon with 44,000 original miles
2001 wrangler Sahara edition 80,xxx
1999 wrangler nice with a lift and brand new 31' under it.
Plus many many many many more that went to the shredder

After all was said and done, many dealers got screwed in the deal as well waiting for payment.. It's amazing how many of these government programs that were supposed to help the economy ended up making things worse in the end. I'm horrible with money, yet could teach them many things about managing it..

Call me blomde, but wasnt cash for clunkers a program for cars that wouldnt pass smog emissions? Or as in CA it was if it cost more to fix the emissions then car was worth.... I wanna say they offered Californians like $500 bucks per vehicle. And those cars in those pics look brand now, how can they not pas a emissions test?

No ma'am the deal was if a vehicle was under a certain MPG mandated by the federal government (18 MPG) it was allowed to become part of a $4,500 rebate from the federal government towards the purchase of a new car of better mileage. It didn't matter about emissions since Minnesota does not have any type of emissions or inspection of any sort for licensing. These cars looked especially good in this state because cars rustout way before the end of usage. These pictures only show not even 1% of the vehicles that went through this program that took 750,000 quality used cars out of the market. It hurt the market because these cars never went to the auctions and were never recycled into the public. It also broughtI the price of the left over vehicles up almost $1,000 to $3,000 over pre 2009 prices. Remember voting does have consequences.

Another wonderful idea by the brilliant dumb azz folks we elected to serve us.

All it did was take thousands of perfectly good cars off the street and turn them into scrap metal which we sold to China for probably nothing. Then they could recycle it and build stuff that would be resold to us. What they really should have done was take all these perfectly good automobiles and sell they real cheap to the people that REALLY needed a reliable car but couldn't afford one.

Way to go Capitol Hill. You bunch of money hungry, crooked,

The targeted vehicles were 1986 and newer, most of which are good clean burning and reliable vehicles. The target years should have been 1973 to 1985 vehicles. This program did nothing that was promised, but put a car payment on somebody's back that could not afford it, or help purchase an extra vehicle for somebody with a little wealth. Any time the govornment says they want to help you, you can bet you're going to get screwed over in some fashion.
