What worked great for me was removing the carpet and saturating it in purple power, letting that sit for about thirty minutes, then scrub, then rinse really well. I used a quarter car wash to rinse them. As for the seats; I removed the covers and sprayed them down w/ the purple power, ran them through the wash with oxi clean, let air dry, then reinstall.

I rented one of those carpet steam cleaners from the grocery store for $15, got the wand for upholstery cleaning to go with it.

It worked wonders on the carpet AND the seats, (WITHOUT removing them), I couldn't believe how dirty the water was when I emptied it, it got out a LOT of dirt.

And my carpet and seats were filthy before I cleaned them, lots of coffee stains from the previous owner.

Before you steam clean, spray down carpet and seats with 409 or similar grease fighter, it will loosen the dirt, go over everything with the steam cleaner, then let it dry for a few hours, go over it again, everything will be clean.

I rented the rug doctor with the attachment it really did work. But with 20 years of dirt and everything else, it didn't take all the stains out, but i did get over 15 buckets of nasty water out of it. So if anybody is wanting to rent a rug doctor with the attachment to clean their carpets or seats it is a must,

Purple power cleaner can do the trick. Also, Simple Green is a good alternative.

The real trick is getting stains out so they don't come back...

With stuff really stained up or old stains it takes 3 or 4 cleanings to get it all out.The seat covers is best to take them off and run them through the washing machine. The carpet you have to think how much its gonna cost you to get it clean vs replacing it.

I've found the best method to cleaning the carpet is removing it, cutting it up into sections and placing it in trash bags and letting the local garbage truck take care of it.

Carpet in a jeep is like having a screen door in a submarine. Useless.

Have you even considered ditching the carpet and bedlining the interior?

You mentioned rust stains on the carpet. You're best to pull the carpet and fix the rust anyway.
