Default Car audio help

Im going to be getting this sub: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_500SWR1...-SWR-12D4.html and this amp: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_500MRXM...-MRX-M110.html and im looking at this box: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_777BB12...ss-Bunker.html

in the description of the sub it says "The recommended ported box volume ranges from 1.1 cubic feet to 1.6 cubic feet. The ideal size is 1.48 cubic feet, using a slot port measuring 12-1/2" (W) x 1" (H) x 19" (L)." and i was curious if that box is slot ported or not? would the sub sound better in a different box? what box should i get? thanks

For that sub I would go with a sealed inclosure. A ported or slotted inclosure will let it bottom out causing you to burn the coils.

The sealed inclosure will just make your amp a little hotter but the sub should never blow.

Ported or slotted inclosures are good for cheap subs or a low watt amp.

I myself would use http://subthump.com/Jeep-Sub-Boxes/C...Enclosure.html A 10" sub, and a 5 channel amp. It is nice to retain the cargo space in back for more use-full things. Instead of just stereo equipment. JMO!

Hmm I've never heard of that I will have to look into it. The guy on crutch field said that would work but idk if a normal slot box would work better? What do you guys think?

Do a search on here, there are a lot folks who have their subwoofer in the rear pocket cargo space. Also a member KFXHellrazor makes them.

Yeah I want to run a 12 inch sub tho which requires a larger box. Should I just run the box I posted earlier?

You can, But like i said before. You'll be giving up valuable cargo space in the back for the sub box. Also having a visible sub box in the back is like screaming to have it stolen. Both things I didn't want. There is another stereo related thread on here right now. So I posted what, I my self am running two 5.25 speakers in the front doors, two 6x9 speakers in the rear hatch, one 10" sub in the rear cargo pocket. (All rockford fosgate punch series) A 1400 watt 5 channel amp under the rear seat. And a Pioneer DEH-90HDD head unit. And it sounds like a concert hall. I'm very happy with it.

If it were me I'd stay away from prefab boxes completely... If you have the tools to make your own box, GO FOR IT. Its actually really easy I finished up my first box last week and it looks like something you'd buy at a store. With building a box you set your own dimensions, internal volume, tuning, and bracing. You can also build them a lot sturdier than what you can get online or at a local car audio store. As for the sub and amp, they will do good together, but crutchfield over prices there stuff massively. Hopefully you were just giving us links to that to show us the products and thats not where you will buy them. Sure, they have good customer service, but other stores do to and you can get them for a lot cheaper.

i'm confused...

what does a sealed or vented box have anything to do with the longevity of ANY amp? Not trying to be a d!k...just never heard anyone describe it like that.

Sealed boxes are to be used for pass-through speakers... the one with a vent hole in the magnet. It has different bass charactoristics then a ported box and standard speaker. there is a guy on here who makes a 12" box for a side panel mount. Completely over priced if you ask me...just for a box was 350. shipped to jersey. But the quality looked AWESOME.

If i was from the "more money than brains club"...i would ****** it up.

The guy on here ("KFXHellRazor") was an example. Just like sub thump http://subthump.com/Jeep-Sub-Boxes/Cherokee was an example. I made my own, Before I even knew about the others. There is a lot threads here about other folks, also making their own. The point I was trying to make, not to use a sub box (ported or unported). Because I valued my cargo space more. Also to deter possible break ins. By not having a sub box laying in the back. I have almost $2000 into my stereo set-up. And you would not know it by just looking in the windows. Even if you saw the remote for head unit laying on seat.
