Hello, I am new to this forum and new to the jeep scene. I have a 1996 cherokee sport that is 2 wheel drive. I would like to turn it into a 4 wheel drive. How difficult will that be? I am looking a to get another one after the first of the year that is already 4 wheel drive to lift if not already lifted and use as a daily driver. How do I go about seeing if my 2 wheel drive is a XJ or not. This way I know what parts I need to be looking for to upgrade it to 4 wheel drive. I would like to use this one as my play toy when it is upgraded.

Front axel, drive shaft, transfer case, transmission, I believe there may be more but that's all I can think of off the top of my head

how do I go about finding out if my Cherokee is a XJ or not. Sorry for the dumb questions. I am new to all this and I never thought I would love this Jeep as much as I do. I have always had a full size truck. The one Jeep I have now the floor is rusted out so I want to use this one as a play toy and get another in better shape to drive everday.

If its just a cherokee its an xj, if its a grand cherokee its not. *unless your in europe, they called the liberty a cherokee over there. *

All Cherokees are "XJ's" they were just made in 2 wheel drive as well as 4 wheel drive kinda like wranglers now available in 2 and 4 wheel drive and even 2wd it's still very capable

Thank jmurdock45 and Veeb0rg. Do yall think it would be worth the transfermation to 4 wheel drive or just keep this one for a daily driver and get one already 4 wheel drive and play with it after a few mods?

My honest opinion would just to buy a 4 wheel drive and use the 2wd as your daily driver because you are already gonna spend a lot of money on parts for a conversion might as well buy a new one but that's my view on it
