Default Can you shift on the fly

Can you shift into 4w High on the fly or do you need to be stopped? Granted at slow enough speeds. Have a 89 XJ. Also how does a person know which transfer case they have? My shifter say 2w, 4w part time, 4w fulltime and 4 low. Thanks

Assuming the TC case is working properly you can. You have an NP242 since it has a full time option, 231 doesn't.

Yes, the high ranges can be entered at any speed. For best results let off the gas when you are shifting so the unit isn't under as much stress. 4 Part Time should not be used on dry pavement.

4Low you need to be at a very very slight crawl. The manual states about 2 MPH.

I don't know if something is broken or it's suppose to be this way but my 89 with 242 will not allow shifting into 4-low if the transmission is in gear. PS, I tried it at 2mph, not 50mph.

good to know.... doubt I'll ever need to shift into 4wd at that speed but I'll toss that into the proverbial toolbox nonetheless...

Many times.

Here's how the factory suggests you shift the transfer case and I've been doing this since these things were new and I worked at the dealership. Quoted from the owner's manual.

"To engage, shift the transfer case lever from 2H to 4H while the vehicle is moving at any legal speed". I let off the gas, throw the lever, and then tap the gas and let off.

4L position: " To engage, slow the vehicle to 2-3 MPH , shift the transmission to Neutral, then shift the transfer lever to the right and pull firmly rearward to 4L".

You won't. Shift On the Fly was a great selling point, and it works great.

I did some pretty extensive "testing" at times.
