I used to have oak "overload springs" on an old military trailer that I used for a log trailer.
I just predrilled the wood blocks and then ran a couple of lag screws down through existing holes in the frame right over the axle tube. Once loaded the oak blocks would settle down on top of the axle and stay there, and the screws held them up when empty.
It really wasn't that awful of a plan, because many real log trailers just have rubber pad suspensions and no springs at all (same with the rear ends of the trucks).
