Default Between what years are best to buy

Hi all...
My wife and I are looking at buying a vehicle. I was talking to a friend at work who suggested an older jeep. Never thought of it but what she said made sense. Very cheap to buy older models. Easy to repair doesn't need to be hooked up to diagnostic computer and after market parts are readily available.

I mentioned that vw are similar in many ways but she said parts were more and labor is cost is higher since it is a forgiven car. She suggested I stick with a jeep for the cheapest over all cost if ownership.

I was looking at the Cherokee since there are five in our family and a German Shepard who goes everywhere with us. Mom and dad in front. Three kids in back and dog in far back.

So finally my question. Between what years should I get. Between what years are the jeep grand cherokee still repairable without computers.

I am not a huge car repair guy but I want to learn hopefully. Can do oil change air filters tires but that's is about it. So something that us reliable inexpensive and I might be able to work on for some repairs.

Nothing 95 or older comes under the heading of cheap when you factor in all the parts likely needing replacement. Yes the parts are relatively inexpensive but the labor isn't if you're paying someone else. You'll need to ramp up in a hurry and as andrewmp6 points out you'll be dealing with a computer regardless. 96 and newer just gets tougher to pass emissions.
