Im looking at new rides. Sold the Cherokee and our Escort so we need something "new."

Im looking at getting a 1997 Nissan Kingcab 4x4 or a 1983 Toyota Landcruiser 4x4. I'm looking at Grand Cherokees, but I hear some negative things about them. Little things break on them I guess, or they can get emission issues. Not 100% sure as I don't take this stuff 100% but I do listen.

Anyways, I have been eyeballing them but if I were to end up picking one up, what are the best model years for the WJ and WK to be looking at? For WK because of prices, the newest I might be able to go on those is 2007?
As far as the WK, would the diesel model be worth it? Can the system easily handle more boost? I know of the Liberty they ended up having to detune it to preserve the torque converter.

Im staying away from the V6 period. Which V8's are the most reliable dependable? They all about even or does one stand out?

For WJ, I'd say 02+, with preference of 02. With that year you get upgraded brake calipers that don't seize, the option of a H.O. 4.7 V8 (265 HP on 91 octane vs. 235 HP PTV8, I forget the exact torque numbers, I want to say 325/295, respectively) and it was only the first year they started de-optioning/plastic-ing them. Those two are the only V8 available on the WJ.
