I actually used Tremclad Rust Enamel... Its very similar to the rustoleum stuff. I re-did all my wheelwells last winter.. And I live in Canada. I'm actually VERY surprised how well its holding up. Not a single rock chip, nothing. On my relocation brackets I used dupicolor hi-temp engine paint because that's all I had... It completely gone and the bracket is rusting within 2 months.
I also like the tremclad because I can buy the pints of it, use a foam brush and just lather it on... Then use the rattle cans and do a finish coat to give a smooth finish while still being very thick, and not making as big as a mess.
Rustoleum is the 3/4 recommendation here. I'll use that!
I'm painting Serious Offroad's steering kit, and figured you guys doing fab's also paint "raw" metal a lot.
The Serious kit has some sort of protective coating on it (oxide???), besides the oil, do I have to sand that off or degrease and use an acid etching primer before paint?
id rather get parts that are raw then powder coated. once they start chipping, aint no stopping em. i use rusteoleum flat black as well. its easy to touch up too if i scratch anything up.
did this a few months ago so dont really know how well its going to hold up.in az. lots of branches & cactus dont hurt it bad.if it last thru the summer i will believe in it!
thats the rustoleum bed liner.preped real good.i dont like the way it sprays out of the can. am going to try other brands to see how they spray.

Since buying my XJ I have found that all Powder Coating jobs are not equal for damn sure! Like many other things its who does them and what kind of a job the builder of the product wants to pay for. I have 8 different items on my XJ that I have bought that were coated both inside and outside. Out of those 8 items 2 of them have held up without any problems all on the exterior and from the same manufacturer that being Roxolid Trail Armor. The items are my rear "Crawler" swing out tire carrier bumper and my Rocker Skids were the most surprising of all. These have held up to abuse without chipping backing into, driving over rocks and dragging on who knows what. The other powder coated items all were chipped or scratched even my interior custom made cubby hole tool box.
I do use the same Rustoleum paint to touch-up the powder coated items also. If does a pretty good job but if it's a chip I use a brush type touch-up for a little more fill, just for looks.
