Default Bedliner Headliner!

So after a year of dealing with a saggy headliner I decided to suck it up and fix it. Well I read about doing this and was back and forth on whether to or not. And I did. It honestly doesn't look bad. There's a few spots here and there but all together if you didn't know I did it and tl you didn't look too hard or let alone touch it you couldn't tell it wasn't just black fabric.

Default bed liner as headliner

Hey I just wanted to say Great Job on tht headliner! It looks like you did exactly what I have been planning to do, which is paint the actual board the headliner goes on.

Did you have any trouble remounting it to the ceiling? or getting the plasic siding to screw back on over the textured board?
What prep work did you have to do to the board before you sprayed the lining?

I had a buddy riding with me the other day and drove all around for about an hour and he didn't even notice till right before he got out. He's a Jeep guy too haha and he's doing his soon.

And the only problem I had was I have a small hairline crack on the passenger side from where I wasn't careful putting it in.

And all I simply did was take it out, pulled the fabric off and used a 2inch plastic dry wall putty knife to scape it off, then I broom without the handle to sweep it all off.

I'm doing it to my woods jeep soon too.

How many cans of the product did it require? How is it holding up after another year has passed? Do you notice any additional noise without the carpet insulator? Thanks!

Hey! First of all welcome to the forum! You'll find ALOT of help and advice on here.

If I remember right it took 4 cans. Its holding up perfect! And there's absolutely no noise difference cause the headliner is still used. I did the same to my woods Cherokee earlier this year.

Thanks for the bump. I've been thinking of doing this. I wonder if they offer other colors. Time to check into that.

Yeah. You'll want to take it out of course. Then I used a 2 inch or even 4 inch cheap plastic drywall putty knife to scrape off the old glue. Then I used the head of a hard bristled broom to sweep the glue off. You might to some light sanding to get it all of as much as possible. Then you're ready to paint it. Just prep it good and it will turn out that much better.

You might try roll on but I use unsure if it would eat through the headliner or not.

Headliner job looks good. Just a tip on prep work for anyone else doing this. I recommend you buy a rattle can of grease remover. itll clean up any chemical residue and dirt. just spray and wipe off the board it'll keep the Bedliner from flaking off in the long run.

Thanks for getting right back to me! I tore out my headliner yesterday and have a few concerns...

I am wondering if your headliner backing/board is pretty stiff since you talk about scraping off glue with a putty knife. I have a 97, and I believe the headliner materials are different for 98/99+. (I see that you have the built in speaker moldings, where mine is the actual separated sound bar that mounts horizontally after the headliner piece is already in place).

The reason I bring this up is because my padded fiberglass is decently soft and can easily be bent or probably even torn. If I scrape my finger along the remaining liner residue it does come right off, however if I dig my nail it goes into layers and I fear a putty knife would shred the rest. Spraying with a grease remover would probably just soak into the material or melt the actual headliner "board". I assume the bedliner will have no issue with bonding since the previous adhesive lasted approx 15 years.

Also, since you have performed this a couple times now, did you use the same product both times? Any specifics on the product, or which one is preferred?

I'll probably head out this weekend to gather a few cans and get her back up before Monday.

Thanks!
