i think the lower rating is due to the stitching on the loop ends. the thread may only be rated for 7k.

and that ARB strap is really worth it. its gotten some wrongler drivers out of a few tight spots.

I have 2 3" x 30' recovery straps that I carry in my 4x4s, also a 12' x 3" tree strap and a 2" by 6' tree strap, a ****** block, and 3 shackles. I have had them for 5 years, used them to recover to many rigs to count. I paid like 30 something bucks each for the 3" x 30' straps. They work just fine and cost about half as much as the ARB straps.

Two 3"x30' loop straps (10k load, 30k break), shackles (2 rear, 2 front), 48" hi-lift, tree saver, 2" ball receiver (always in the class 3 hitch), shovel, leather gloves.

I stay away from chain and hooks. If a strap snaps (with hooks or with chain connected), I'd rather not have a metal flying at my rear window and then the back of my head. 2 straps are always a good idea, as you may need to loop one through the other to get a longer run, and a tree saver plus a hi-lift make for a great come-along.

Yes, pretty much everyone knows not to use chain to tow with, the chain I use is only to get the tire off the ground. If you break a bead or need to change a tire, you can use the 40 inch chain and hooks to chain the axle to the uni-frame area, so you will be able to jack the axle off the ground without fopping the rig on the side.

You'd be surprised. Either way, its' always better to explain that fact so that anyone new to using recovery gear will know not to use chains/hooks to tow with.

Yeah, I did explain what I used the 40 inch chain with hooks for.

I picked up a 20ft, 7,000lb recovery strap, but am unsure of what to use to hook it to the jeep; hooks, shackles, anything else... Also are there other basics I should be carrying? I do carry a shovel. This is mostly for winter type situations, as this is not a mudder or rock crawler. It's a dd that also shuttles me and my kayaks up and down mountains.

I picked up and axle strap at tractor supply. $10 and works great for those without recovery points.

I personally would stay away from any hard pulling when the strap is around the axle. The only time I would even tie anything around the axle is if it was to secure it on a trailer.
