axle gear question

my buddy has two 88 xj's and wants me to swap rear ends cuz his dd rear end went out, i havent had time to look at the jeeps yet and he knows nothign about cars so whats the possability they both have the same ratios? they both have 4.0s and they are 88's thats all i know, im not even sure if they have d35s or 8.25s. when i had my xj's they were all 3.55 and 8.25s but ive only had 99 and up.

I believe that the 8.25 didnt come till 90 i believe.
So they should be a direct bolt.
As far as gears if they are both autonatic, they should be the same gears. If one is 5 speed and the other auto, it wont work.
I think you gotta watch out for tow packages etc since they have different gears.

As long as they r both auto odds are they r both D35 w/3:55 ratio, but there is an odd chance that 1 of them has a D44! & if his good axle turns out to be a D44 I'll trade him my D35!!! Lol NOT JOKING
