What do you think of my caliper? Two right angle squares a small c-clamp and a tape measure, works pretty good I think.

Ok guys, here was the deal. ALL the specs we have found say the XJ/MJ D44 is 2.75" tubes. Now for the "Things that make you go Hmmm?..." I have three D44s for the XJ/MJ platform. The two Tracloc housings are 3" but the one open carrier housing matches the specs exactly. The MJ D44 tracloc came out of a 1986. The XJ D44 tracloc came out of a 1987. The open D44 came out of a MJ but not sure about the year.

Yes that's right. So we were wondering if those equipped with trac-lok had bigger axle tubes.

Since i own a MJ, i inquired with another MJ specific forum but all i have gotten was "It's only available in 2.75" or "Its not a MJ axle." Guess im just going to have to take it for what it is, i have another oddity.

Another thing to note that the Rubicon Dana 44 front and rear axles out of 2003-2006 TJ wranglers have 2-5/8" axle tubes.

ZJ:
Dana 35 in 3.55 $200
Dana 30 in 3.73 CV axles $200

TJ:
2-Dana 35 in 3.73 $450 each

No but if you could help us out here, that would be great.

Now with this MJ D44, i even had to swap the spring retainer plates over as they were bigger as well. Have you ever seen this before?

I think you're correct on the size. Will verify later today.
