I agree it there is less contact and the pinion is smaller. But 75% of failures I've seen were contributed to improper install, and the remaining 25% were a situation that would have broken even 4.56. The only thing you really need to worry about if running open carrier is deflection. Even then it's not as bad as everyone makes it out.

You want the deeper gears for a crawler, why do you think people put up to 5.38 and beyond under their axles, not a in a 30, but still deep.

We're not talking about dedicated crawlers, op asked about towing, and with his vehicle weight and what he plans to do 4.88 are really the only way to go. I was just saying he doesn't need to be worried about his 30 exploding if he does 4.88.
Actually that was my reasoning for going 4.88s to be honest. I agree with you. and I have a Detroit in the rear and a elocker in the front. the other thing that helps is a high pinion 30. I'm sure you know it operates on the drive side of the gear so it pulls the set together some under tourqe. and 97% of the time the front is just there not doing anything. when offroad even then it's not under heavy stress really.

Update:
I finally have 4.88 gears installed and have towed a 3400 lb. trailer (loaded with water, etc) with my 4600 lb Cherokee (loaded with armor, steel bumpers, roof rack, etc).

Conclusion: I can tow to my hearts desire though on really hot days, IE: 110 up a grade, I have to watch my temperatures (will upgrade radiator and tranny cooler).

I run at top speed of 50 to 60 mph at 3k to 4k in third gear with 31" inch tires....so slow to go is the rule, especially up the 6% grade runs into the mountains (Tucson to N. AZ & once to Colorado)

Thanks for all your help and advice.

Are you still running that setup? What tire size are you running on those 4.88s?
