Ok here goes nothing, My wife has a righthand drive 1996 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4X4. She said she could here a popping noise and was not sure where it was coming from, I replaced the uv joints and put a Chrysler 8.25 in cause the one that was on leaked gear oil all the time. When I drove it again it still made like a popping noise and would feel like it would lose speed. So, I decided to take the transfer case off and check it and make sure that the yoke was still good and change the uv joints on the front drive shaft. After I put everything back together just like the same way I took it off, I can not get the transmission to engage to drive it,I did have to remove the linkage from the transfer case and put it back but still can not get the jeep to go forward or backward Help me please anyone

 

I would start by checking the color and level of the transmission fluid.
