Also gathering parts for a 4x4 conversion. But I have always been surprised at how capable a 2WD XJ can be. You can't tell by looking at it that it's a 2WD...

My 2wd is lifted 3.5" and rides on 30" ATs. When I was shopping for this one (my 2nd XJ) I definitely wanted a ax15 but didn't necessarily need the 4wd, so when I found this one in good shape for $900 I jumped on it (it didn't quite look like it does now).
Being in FL, my off-roading consists of service trails on hunting leases, and it does just fine for that. I'm thinking of getting an e-locker just for extra insurance, but probably won't really need that. I've got recovery gear, tow points, and friends in close range to give a pull, but I've never come close to being stuck on this XJ (I'm careful though).
I got this for the Utility aspect of the SUV, because the Honda just couldn't do what I needed/wanted. But after seeing 23 mpg highway versus 30 in the Honda, I'm also pretty proud of the economy of this thing as well. To top it off, I never expected it to feel so sporty, but once I stopped driving like an old man and started letting the revs climb to 2500-3000, I really fell in love.
My 2wd gets the job done for me.
